Triathica Triathlon Training for Beginner to Experienced Triathletes

PICTURE YOURSELF…

Ron Saetermoe

Picture yourself at the starting line of your next (or first) triathlon. Hundreds of other athletes are milling around but none of them look as nervous as you feel. You’re looking out over the water for the swim start with a ton of apprehension. You’re telling yourself “I CAN do this!” while you’re really thinking “Am I nuts?”

Part of your nervousness comes from the shear excitement of competition, but does some of it also come because you’re not sure if you’re adequately prepared?

First of all, let me assure you, that EVERYONE is nervous. Even after having done 100+ triathlons I get nervous. Second, no one ever feels completely prepared. We’re always second-guessing our training, our nutrition, our equipment, our rest, etc.

Now picture yourself at the starting line having received expert guidance about your race. Someone to provide you with the information you need to have a successful race, no matter what your goals are. Someone that has been there before and that has seen just about everything.

Sure, you’re still nervous, but you’re also confident that you’ve had the coaching you need to meet your raceday goals. You know what to expect from setting up your transition area to crossing the finish line.

That’s what we do here at Triathica . . . we get you ready for your next (or first) triathlon. We provide everything from our state-of-the-art training facility to training plans and personal training to informative training sessions.

Don’t just “do” your next (or first) triathlon, “race” it! We’ll show you how.

Cheers!

FREE GROUP WORKOUTS (Week of November 2nd)

All of our group workouts are free to members and non-members, so come on out (Pool entry is $2.50)!

If we all go at the slowest person’s pace many people won’t be getting in a proper workout. We will attempt to pair you up with another athlete so you’re not left alone.

NOVEMBER SPECIAL, SWIM TRANSFORMATION PACKAGE

Do you dread the triathlon swim? You’re not alone. I’ll bet more than 50% of triathletes do.

If you’re interested in improving your swim performance in 2010, we’ve got the solution for you. No, it’s not more mind-numbing laps, it’s our Swim Transformation Package.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: We videotape your stroke, analyze it, provide feedback and a DVD copy for you.
Step 2: You receive five personal training sessions in our Endless Pool.
Step 3: We videotape your stroke again and review your improvement.

And here’s the best part: if you don’t think your stroke has improved after your five sessions we’ll refund every penny!

DO YOU THINK YOU CAN GO FASTER? I DO TOO!

Ron Saetermoe

Strange isn’t it that during a race we feel as if we’re going as fast as we absolutely can then afterward think that we could have gone a little faster? Naturally, after the pain has subsided, faster seems quite possible.

My goal for every race is to feel good about my performance. That’s it. That’s my goal. Of course, if I better my time from last year, or manage to reach the podium, I’m quite happy about that. But most of all, I just want to feel good about my performance.

For example, my “A” race this year is Ironman Arizona on November 22nd. In order to do my best there I’ve had to sacrifice my racing performance to a degree to keep up with my training plan (yes, I use a training plan – I don’t just suggest you use one). My performance at the OC Triathlon this year was quite good considering I rode 70 miles the day before and followed that up with a short transition run.

My time in 2008 was 2:34:51. 2009 it was 2:28:40. I’d improved my time even though I trained hard the day before.

A couple weeks ago I won my age group at the Magic Mountain Man ½ Ironman. I didn’t plan it that way; I just raced my race and ended up winning.

Everyone has different goals when it comes to triathlon. For my friend Russ Jones, it’s winning. At one point he had over 30 consecutive age group wins (and many of those were OVERALL wins). My friend Kirk Matkin’s goal is just to have fun (if pain to you is fun). He joked that at the Honu ½ Ironman this year that he was going to take pictures all day and send them to us. It just gives you an idea of how our goals are different.

Going faster is a combination of a lot of things. Improvement in form, fitness and nutrition all contribute to it. Understanding the nuances of the race as well as your own body contribute too. It’s a lot of things, including some luck.

Do I think you can go faster? If that’s your goal, I’m sure you can. If you want to know how, you know where to find us.

Cheers!

6-MONTH WINTER TRAINING MEMBERSHIP: LAST CHANCE!

By popular demand, we have decided to extend our 6-month winter training membership, for only $180, until the end of October. However, the six months still begins on October 1st, so every day you wait is another day you miss training on some of the best triathlon performance equipment in Orange County.

We know many people were very busy and didn’t get a chance to come in to sign up before the deadline. If you can’t find the time to stop in, just call us up. We can get you set up over the phone.

Don’t miss this opportunity to have a place to come when it gets cold, rainy, dark, and windy outside. Our thought is that with winter coming and daylight savings going, you’ll want to do more of your training indoors. And what better way than with our PowerTap spin bikes, CompuTrainers, an Endless Pool, and Landice treadmills, the smoothest and most quiet treadmills you will ever run on?

We have literally everything you need to get your workouts in, all in a cozy, air-conditioned facility. Don’t let the comfort fool you. Indoor training is the perfect way to focus on your workout and your workout alone. No worrying about cars, obstacles, visibility, flat tires, waiting for a lane, wearing a jacket, etc. Everything is in a controlled setting which helps you take your workouts to the next level. Dominate next year by staying in shape over the off-season.

Give us a call or come on in. 949.273.6223, Jarrett@triathica.com or 26475 Rancho Parkway South, Lake Forest

POWER UP! DVD

Jarrett Pfleiger

We’re extremely pleased to announce that we sold our very first workout DVD this week! This is an entirely new avenue for Triathica — one that we’re all very excited about.

Triathica is in the process of creating the Triathica Academy, which is basically “the school for triathlon.” This school, like many traditional schools, has a campus and will offer online and distance learning as well. Power Up! is our first distance-learning offer.

Our goal with our workout DVDs is to go beyond the traditional exercise DVD’s and help the athlete track their progress. For example, when you purchase Power Up! , you are encouraged to go to www.triathica.com to establish your training zones, and corresponding “watts” (if available).
The training zones are referenced throughout the workout and will allow you to gauge your effort and compare it to previous and subsequent workouts. If the athlete can establish their watts, the athlete’s progress gets even clearer.

So if you’re looking for a great workout you can do at home on your trainer or spin bike, look no further.

BROOK BOYNTON – KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER

Ron Saetermoe

I received a text message from Larry Davidson at 4:23 this morning (Monday the 19th). The message said that Brook Boynton, a gifted triathlete in our age group, was killed in a car crash.

That kind of news is like a punch to the stomach. You simply can’t believe it’s true. In this case, it is true.

Brook was a member of the Orange County Triathlon Club and an amazing runner. We saw him frequently at the local races and watched his progress in the sport. Every time I saw him running in a triathlon I thought that he must be part of a relay because no one has legs that fresh after a long swim and bike ride.

Brook was killed on Friday, October 16th while driving south on the 73 toll-road. A drunk driver traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour hit his SUV from behind and caused it to roll and eject Brook. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

We dodge death every day. We know the stories. Three runners died last weekend at the Detroit Marathon. A runner died a couple years ago at the OC Marathon. Every year at least one swimmer dies during a triathlon. And of course we all know someone that was struck down in the prime of his or her life of cancer or some other infliction.

We try to remind ourselves to savor each day because it truly can be our last. Brook’s last day was last Friday. I hope he savored it. We’ll miss you Brook.

Cheers!
